The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is designated by Northwestern University (NU) to review, to approve the initiation of, and to conduct periodic review of research involving human subjects or materials obtained from human subjects. Federal law and/or NU policy mandates prior written and dated IRB approval of all such research regardless of the funding source. The Institution's Federalwide Assurance Identification number as filed with the Department of Health and Human Services is FWA 0000-1549.
The FDA and OHRP has issued a final rule to require IRBs to register through a system maintained by the Department of Health and Human Services. Our IRB Organization(IORG) number is IORG0000247.
The Office for the Protection of Research Subjects is soliciting nominations for faculty service on the Institutional Review Board.
An IRB is an institutional review board, established to review proposed human subject research. The IRB may approve, require modifications (to secure approval), or disapprove research. At Northwestern University (NU), all human subject research (regardless of funding) must be reviewed and approved by an IRB before initiation.
