Rex Chisholm
Dr. Chisholm is the vice dean for Scientific Affairs and Graduate Education at the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Adam and Richard T. Lind Professor of Medical Genetics. He maintains his vice dean position within Feinberg. The dual administrative appointments facilitate enhanced alignment between the medical school and many other units within Northwestern and promote the collaboration between the life sciences and the other disciplines across both Northwestern campuses.
As an associate vice president, Professor Chisholm oversees two offices: the Office for Sponsored Research in both Evanston and Chicago (OSR) and the Center for Comparative Medicine (CCM). He is also responsible for several University Research Centers, primarily in the Life Sciences. Those centers will include the Institute for BioNanotechnology in Medicine (IBNAM), the Chemistry of Life Processes Institute (CLP), the Center for Molecular Innovation and Drug Discovery (CMIDD), the Proteomics Center of Excellence (PCE), and the Physical Science-Oncology Center (PSOC).
Prof. Chisholm received both his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan where he was a trainee of the NIH training program in Genetics. As a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he developed methods for analyzing the patterns of gene expression during development. He joined the Northwestern faculty in 1984. Starting in 2000, he was the founding director of the Center for Genetic Medicine. He became vice dean for research at Feinberg in 2007. He continues to serve as PI on several NIH grants focused on genomics and informatics and leads the NUgene project, a biobank of nearly 11,000 consented individuals who have agreed to participate in projects to develop approaches to personalized medicine.
