Kaj Blennow, MD PhD

Topic: "Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers in Alzheimer's Disease: Role in Clinical Diagnosis and in Translational Medicine"

Dr. Kaj Blennow is Professor in Clinical Neurochemistry at the University of Göteborg, and chief Physician at the Neurochemistry Lab at Sahlgren's University Hospital, Göteborg, Sweden. He has specialist competence in general psychiatry and in clinical chemistry. Prof. Blennow has published more than 250 original publications together with 20 reviews and numerous research reports. The major research fields include: studies on cerebrospinal fluid biochemical markers for Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders; genetic mechanisms of AD, with focus on susceptibility genes for AD, and the neurochemical pathogenesis, including neurotransmitter disturbances in AD and other brain disorders. He has received a number of scientific awards, including the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP) Award (1991), the Collegium Internat. Neuro-Psychopharmacologicum (CINP) Award (1992), the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) Research Award (1993), the Nordic Society for Research in Brain Aging (NORAGE) Research Award (1994), the Swedish Medical Association Research Award (1996), and the Alois Alzheimer Research Award, Munchen, Germany (2001).
