WED@NICO, TODD MURPHEY "Topology Scheduling for Power Network Stability"
Wednesday, May 22, 2013 - 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Location: Evanston
How should instabilities be addressed when control authority is limited to discrete changes in the network? Power networks with changes in their topologies are hybrid systems--they have a finite set of governing equations that depend on time and possibly the state of the network. Designing these discrete changes to either minimize or maximize some objective function is the purpose of hybrid optimal control. For instance, one may wish to design time-dependent changes in transmission lines to stabilize a multimachine power network that would otherwise go unstable. Solving the associated optimal control problem is challenging due to the integer constraints on the inputs found in the governing equations. In this talk I will discuss a method that does not require a priori discretization and does not relax the optimization, but does provide guarantees on both convergence and computational complexity. Moreover, at every iteration the algorithm returns a dynamically feasible solution. The method parallels classical gradient descent methods from finite dimensions, but in an infinite-dimensional and nondifferentiable setting, making implementation of the algorithms reasonably straightforward. I will illustrate the algorithmic technique on a standard IEEE power network test case.

The Romanovs and Their Dynasty
Thursday, May 23, 2013 - 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
Location: Evanston
Richard Wortman, Professor Emeritus, Columbia University
This year marks the four-hundredth anniversary of the election of Michael Romanov to the Russian throne. One hundred years ago it was the occasion for elaborate celebrations of the dynasty. This presentation examines the meaning of the dynasty, its functioning, justification, representation and practices from Peter the Great to the Romanov revival in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It inquires into the role of law and imagery in the inauguration of Russian monarchs and compares the dynamic of their succession with that of their European counterparts.
Richard Wortman is the author of a two-volume study of Scenarios of Power: Myth and Ceremony in Russian Monarcy (1995-2000), which is already a classic (as we know because it was republished in 2006 in a one-volume edition, and has been translated in full into Russian), as well as earlier studies of The Crisis of Russian Populism and The Development of a Russian Legal Consciousness.
Organized by Central and Southeast European Studies (CSEES).

Conference > A Half-Decade of Crisis: Governing the Global Economy in the New Hard Times
Friday, May 24, 2013 -
Location: Evanston
Since August 2007 financial markets have been rocked by crises emerging from the rich democracies of North America and Western Europe. The conference brings together scholars to reflect on how global economic governance has—and has not—changed during a half-decade of crisis. Have states and intergovernmental institutions clawed back some of the authority they surrendered to private actors in the years before the crisis of 2008? How have key actors in world politics—powerful states, inter- and nongovernmental organizations, sectoral interest groups and other policy entrepreneurs—shaped the post-crisis regulatory agenda? Are financial systems safer now than they were before the crisis? Are global financial markets ungovernable?

?Dissociative Extraction of DLC Boundary Films from Lubricating Oils at Sliding Contact Interfaces by Catalytically Active Nanocomposite Coatings?
Nanocomposite coatings hold great promise for enhancing performance, efficiency, and durability of many types of rolling, rotating, and sliding engine parts and components mainly because of their impressive mechanical and tribological properties. In this presentation, we discuss the details of some novel nanocomposite coatings that are capable of extracting diamondlike carbon (DLC) boundary films from lubricating oils at sliding contact interfaces. Specifically, in these coatings, we identified and strategically combined catalytically active hard (nitrides, carbides, or oxides of Mo, W, V, Re, etc.) and soft phases (such as Ag, Ni, Pd, Au, Cu, etc.) in one coating at some optimum concentrations. When tested under severe contact conditions, these designer coatings were able to dissociate long-chain hydrocarbon molecules of lubricating oils into shorter, dimers and trimers and then deposit them on sliding surfaces as lubricious and highly protective DLC boundary films. Using UV Raman and TOF-SIMS, we have elucidated the structural chemistry of these boundary films and confirmed that they were indeed similar to that of conventional DLC films that are deposited using plasma-based CVD and PVD processes. Under severe sliding, reciprocating, and scuffing test conditions, these DLC boundary films were able to reduce friction by more than 50% and provide extreme resistance to wear and scuffing.
Biography: Dr. Ali Erdemir is a Distinguished Fellow and a Senior Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory with international recognition and significant accomplishments in the fields of materials science, surface engineering, and tribology. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1982 and 1986, respectively, and his B.S. from Istanbul Technical University in 1977. In recognition of his pioneering research, Dr. Erdemir has received numerous awards and honors, including the University of Chicago?s Medal of Distinguished Performance, five R&D-100 Awards, two Al Sonntag and an Edmond E. Bisson Awards from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, and an Innovative Research Award from the Tribology Division of ASME. He is a Fellow ASME, AVS, ASM-International, and STLE. He holds 20 U.S. and international patents, presented more than 150 invited/keynote/plenary talks, authored/co-authored more than 260 research articles and 16 book/handbook chapters, and edited two books. His current research is directed toward nano-scale design and large-scale manufacturing of new materials, coatings, and lubricants for a broad range of applications in manufacturing, transportation and other energy conversion and utilization systems.
