What is a Shared or Core Facility?

A shared or core facility is a research laboratory with instrumentation, services and technical support that are shared by the Northwestern University research community.  In most cases these facilities are recharge centers that require payment for the use and services of the facility.  Some of the facilities are available to external researchers.  Please visit the External Customers link above to learn more about use of NU core facilities.

 

How Can I Find a Core Facility, Equipment or Staff Member?

Please Note: the use of data generated in a core facility in a grant application, progress report or publication contains the implicit understanding that the PI or authors will acknowledge the use of the core facility.  Since many of our facilities are supported by federal agencies, such acknowledgment is mandatory.

 

Authorship: If core personnel provide significant intellectual input to the results submitted for publication, then it is reasonable and appropriate to include them as co-authors.  Since circumstance very widely, each case should be considered individually.
