Introduction
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the volume and complexity of clinical research undertaken at Northwestern University. One consequence of this desirable growth in clinical research activity has been a large increase in the number of protocol submissions to the (OPRS) for review by Northwestern's Institutional Review Board (IRB). To meet the greater administrative demands associated with clinical research, the University has substantially expanded the staffing, space and administrative support provided to the IRB panels and increased the number of panels that meet each month from two to three. In June, 2000, an IRB fee applicable to industry sponsored clinical trials was introduced to help support the funding of this necessary expansion.
IRB Fee
Effective September 15, 2003, the fee for the initial review of a single protocol is $2000. The fee for the continuing review (periodic) of a protocol is $500, assessed annually. These fees apply only to industry supported clinical trials. Clinical trials supported by federal, foundation, department or division funds do not incur these fees. Investigators and departments are responsible for payment of the IRB fees if the cost is not ultimately reimbursed by the sponsor. The amount of both the initial and annual review fees will be reviewed each year by OPRS and are subject to change.
