Limited Submissions ProcessAnnouncementsOfficial announcements about Limited Submissions funding opportunities will be distributed in a targeted fashion to faculty, department chairs, and associate deans for research via email by Alden Chang via ORD's email account: ord@northwestern.edu. These announcements will identify the opportunity, give a brief description, provide a link to the funding agency's site, and indicate all internal and external deadlines. Faculty must adhere to all posted deadlines. Additional announcements may be sent by Holly Falk-Krzesinski for large and/or multi- and interdisciplinary awards or an academic unit. While ORD makes every effort to identify all LS opportunities and notify faculty, it is the responsibility of the faculty to contact Alden Chang and Holly Falk-Krzesinski should a faculty member identify an LS opportunity that she/he is interested in but has not yet received an announcement about from ORD. Faculty may not proceed with an application to an LS competition without explicit approval from Holly Falk-Krzesinski. See: Current Limited Submissions opportunities NominationsNominating a faculty member for a Limited Submissions opportunity is done by responding to the announcement and uploading the required information by the posted internal deadline according to the instructions in the LS announcement for that particular opportunity. Internal applications must be submitted as a *single* pdf document and generally require the following information, but may include other information as deemed appropriate for selection purposes, based on the sponsor requirements.
For equipment/instrumentation and multi-investigator awards:
*Please note that cost-sharing (mandatory or voluntary) commitments are not required at the internal proposal stage and should not be sought until you are notified by the Limited Submissions Advisory committee that you may move forward to the submit an application on behalf of the institution. Faculty who hold primary appointments in FSM, or who are planning to submit their proposal through FSM, may need to participate in a preliminary internal nomination process governed by the Executive Associate Dean for Research. Therefore, in some cases, announcements may include internal deadlines for both FSM and non-FSM faculty. Letters of IntentWhen a faculty member receives notification of a Limited Submissions funding opportunity and becomes interested in applying, he/she is strongly encouraged to email an internal Letter of Intent (LOI) to Alden Chang at alden-chang@northwestern.edu by the specified deadline. While not mandatory or binding, such LOIs greatly assist in the planning of review sessions. ReviewOnce the internal deadline arrives, the nominees' applications made accessible to the Standing Advisory Committee, appointed by the Vice President for Research. The Committee's charge it is to select the maximum number of candidates allowed to apply for an opportunity. The Committee identifies the candidate(s) with the best chance of success in the overall external competition as determined by evaluating the application against the program guidelines and review criteria and then makes a recommendation regarding a nominee(s) to the Vice President for Research. The Vice President for Research has the final authority for selecting a nominee(s). It is likely that some reviews will require additional research expertise not reflected by the composition of the Standing Advisory Committee, under these circumstances the Holly Falk-Krzesinski will select 1-3 ad hoc reviewers, based on their expertise. Selection and NotificationOnce the Managing Chair approves the nominee(s) selection, the individual and her/his department chair and/or associate dean will be notified in writing. Individuals not selected will be notified as well. Candidate ResponsibilitiesOnce a faculty member is selected to apply for a Limited Submissions opportunity, she/he has the responsibility to submit a timely application, barring serious, extenuating circumstances. Should a candidate wish to decline a nomination, she/he needs to do so in writing to her/his chair and Holly Falk-Krzesinski within 3 business days of selection notification. Not doing so will preclude a faculty member from applying to Limited Submissions competitions at the PI in the future.
