ORI HOT TOPIC

The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at Indiana University offers an annual workshop titled "Teaching Research Ethics" (TRE). This workshop is designed specifically for those involved in teaching research ethics or administering research programs at universities. ORI is a proud sponsor of the workshop and encourages Northwestern faculty and staff to take advantage of this valuable resource.

TRE is designed to help identify different ways of teaching and thinking about research ethics and integrating ethics into all areas of research. The group size is small and the program provides opportunity for substantive discussions and networking. The TRE faculty have vast experience and provide practical tools and examples that can easily be incorporated into any research ethics program.

TRE Workshop Content

The workshop emphasizes a variety of pedagogical approaches to teaching research ethics including sessions on the following topics.
  • Ethical theory
  • Research ethics
  • Trainee and authorship issues
  • Assessment and evaluation
  • Responsible data management
  • Integrity in research
  • Conflict of interest
  • International research

Who Should Attend?

Anyone involved in program development, teaching research ethics or administering research programs should consider attending this workshop. If you teach one course on ethics, or would like to incorporate research ethics into any curriculum, TRE is for you.

"For researchers, as well as teachers, it's a valuable course because researchers have to convey this information to the ones they supervise as well...The workshop offered tried and tested ways of teaching ethics and made it interesting and interactive in spite of the intensity of the four-day course."
Larry Thaete, PhD, Research Associate Professor Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine and Evanston Northwestern Healthcare Research Institute 2005 TRE Attendee
Faculty, please note: this workshop meets Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training requirements for NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs).
