The Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions at Indiana University offers an annual workshop titled "Teaching Research Ethics" (TRE). This workshop is designed specifically for those involved in teaching research ethics or administering research programs at universities. ORI is a proud sponsor of the workshop and encourages Northwestern faculty and staff to take advantage of this valuable resource.
TRE is designed to help identify different ways of teaching and thinking about research ethics and integrating ethics into all areas of research. The group size is small and the program provides opportunity for substantive discussions and networking. The TRE faculty have vast experience and provide practical tools and examples that can easily be incorporated into any research ethics program.
The workshop emphasizes a variety of pedagogical approaches to teaching research ethics including sessions on the following topics.
Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to participate in small group break out sessions and intensive tracks on the following topics.
Anyone involved in program development, teaching research ethics or administering research programs should consider attending this workshop. If you teach one course on ethics, or would like to incorporate research ethics into any curriculum, TRE is for you.
Keren Dimah, an IRB Manager with the Office for the Protection of Research Subjects (OPRS), attended TRE in 2007 and comments:
"On a professional level, participating in the ethics workshop reinforced what I do routinely, which includes among other things, upholding the highest ethical standards on the job as well as helping others to do same."
Faculty, please note: this workshop meets Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training requirements for NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs).
The 2008 TRE workshop will take place in Bloomington May 13th -16th and applications are currently being accepted.
ORI's sponsorship allows for two discounted registrations, so please contact ORI if you are interested in attending.
Additional information can be found at http://www.poynter.indiana.edu/tre/.
Julia Janowick and Lauran Qualkenbush from ORI have previously attended the workshop and would be happy to share their experiences. Feel free to contact either of them directly.
