The assignment of all University space ultimately rests with the Provost. To support Office for Research programmatic and administrative operations, the Provost has given the Vice President for Research authority and responsibility for specific space on both campuses. The VPR, in consultation with academic and administrative leadership, determines the best use of the space entrusted to the Office for Research.
A significant portion of OR's space is dedicated to the operations of the University Research Centers. Priority for allocation is determined by whether:
All space is expected to be put to productive use, therefore, space allocations are reviewed on a regular basis. Individual Centers can expect to see the amount of space assigned to them increase or decrease based on changes in the needs and size of their program(s).
Once space has been assigned to a Center, the Director has discretion to assign specific space in the manner best suited to meet the needs of their program(s). Directors may not trade or give away space to other units without the written approval of the VPR. Normal maintenance of assigned space is the responsibility of the Center, but any renovations over $20,000 (regardless of what entity is paying) must be pre-approved by the VPR.
The VPR attempts to provide adequate space to meet the needs of all Office for Research operations, however, there are significant space constraints on both campuses.
