Assistant Director - Safety/Chemical Hygiene Officer

The Assistant Director - Safety (ADS) is responsible for oversight of the University's laboratory safety and industrial hygiene programs. The ADS serves as the University's Chemical Hygiene Officer, a position required by the OSHA laboratory standard. The ADS directly supervises the Laboratory Safety Specialists and coordinates the activities of the Chemical and Biological Safety Committee. The position covers many facets of safety and compliance:

 
  • compliance documentation
  • development of written safety programs
  • training and information dispersement
  • exposure evaluations
  • industrial hygiene monitoring
  • assessment of engineering controls and PPE
  • analysis of work practices
  • research of technical resources, review of safety and health literature
  • reference to the guidelines of professional associations (ACGIH, AIHA, ASSE)
  • interfaces with other University departments (e.g., Facilities Management)
  • oversight of hazardous materials handling.

You might say that the ADS is the "jack-of-all-trades" with respect to lab safety.

The ADS also manages the activities of the other members of ORS involved in the chemical and biological safety programs. The ADS is accountable for the achievement of ORS safety goals and our adherence to the departmental mission. We are here to facilitate your research by protecting lab workers from health exposures.
