- The Chicago Campus HP manages the day-to-day activities
of the radiation safety program on the Chicago campus. The program encompasses
radiation safety and compliance for radioactive materials and other
ionizing radiation sources such as irradiators, analytical X-ray equipment
and electron microscopes. In the non-ionizing radiation area the HP
handles laser registration and signage.
- The Chicago HP performs laboratory surveys, thyroid
counts, and irradiator training.
The HP for the Chicago campus is Joe Princewill. Joe would
be delighted to take your calls should you have specific questions or
are in doubt of what to do. Check the following "Need to" list
to see which item is applicable to you:
- Need to become authorized to possess and use radioactive
materials or radiation producing devices such as X-ray, electron microscope,
etc. for research or teaching.
- Need to select the right radiation detector for the
right process, replace old ailing parts, or schedule required annual
calibration of survey meters.
- Need to schedule training sessions for the Gammacell
irradiator, proper maintenance and use of survey instruments, or contamination
control and prevention.
- Need to know acceptable disposal procedures for aqueous,
dry and mixed radwaste materials.
- Need to have proper shipping documents and labels to
transfer radionuclides from Northwestern University to another institution
or vice versa, or transfer material across the hall to another researcher.
- Need to change laboratory location, add a new lab,
or change personnel from one investigator to another.
- Need to interpret the monthly dosimetry report or have
questions on the dosimetry program or the bioassay schedule.
When you have needs, concerns, uncertainties or just questions
call Joe, drop a line, or send an e-mail. If time allows, stop by the
Office for Research Safety for a radiation safety chat. Feel free, too,
to ask Joe to come up for a friendly lab call.
