The Evanston Campus HP manages the day-to-day activities of the radiation safety program on the Evanston campus. The program encompasses radiation safety and compliance for radioactive materials and other ionizing radiation sources such as irradiators, analytical X-ray equipment and electron microscopes. In the non-ionizing radiation area the HP handles laser registration and signage. The Evanston HP performs laboratory surveys, thyroid counts, and irradiator training.

The HP for the Evanston Campus is also the Assistant Laser Safety Officer (ALSO). The duties of the ALSO include managing a program of safety and compliance for users of class 3B and 4 lasers including registering lasers, training laser users, and advising faculty, staff and students as required by state regulation. The ALSO performs periodic audits of laser laboratories to insure ongoing compliance.

Contact the HP if you have questions such as:

  • How can I sign up to be a radiation worker and know the safe work procedures I should follow?
  • How do I use my survey meter and have it calibrated or repaired?
  • How do I order radioactive materials, receive my package and maintain an accurate inventory?
  • What is my inventory balance?
  • What should I do when I find contamination?
  • What do I need to do to set up my laboratory, change the laboratory location or personnel?
  • What do I need to do to dispose of equipment used with radioactive materials?
  • How can I schedule a bioassay?
  • How do I dispose of my radioactive waste?

When you have needs, concerns, uncertainties or just questions, call or send an e-mail. If time allows, stop by the Office for Research Safety for a radiation safety chat. Feel free to ask me to come to your lab for a friendly lab call.
