The Director administers the University's laboratory safety and industrial hygiene programs. The Director serves as the University's Chemical Hygiene Officer, a position required by the OSHA laboratory standard. The ADS directly supervises the Laboratory Safety Specialists on the Evanston Campus and coordinates the activities of the Laboratory and Chemical Safety Committee. The position covers many facets of safety and compliance:

  • Compliance documentation
  • Development of written safety programs
  • Training and information dispersement
  • Exposure evaluations
  • Respiratory protection
  • Industrial hygiene monitoring
  • Assessment of engineering controls and PPE
  • Analysis of work practices and operational controls
  • Research of technical resources, safety and health literature and professional organization guidelines (e.g. ACGIH, AIHA, ASSE and ANSI)
  • Interfaces with other University departments (e.g., Facilities Management and Risk Management)
