NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards (NPG)
According to NIOSH, "The NIOSH Pocket Guide
to Chemical Hazards is intended as a source of general industrial
hygiene information for workers, employers, and occupational health
professionals." Hazard and other physical data information is provided
for 677 chemicals in tabular form. The "Introduction" link
on the page listed above gives a great deal of information about the
Guide and how to use it. The other links on this page give you
a choice of loading several sizes of HTML versions of the indices to
the Guide. The indices bring you to HTML table versions of chemical
hazards for printing and viewing.
Toxicologic Review
of Selected Chemicals (1988 OSHA PEL Project)
This page takes you to two possible indices of permissible
exposure limits (PEL) as determined by Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) in 1988 from the Air Contaminants Project. They
are a supplement to the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards
and include more detailed information than the cards in the Guide.
International Chemical
Safety Cards (WHO/IPCS/ILO)
This link takes you to the introductory Web page of
the International Chemical Safety Cards (ICSC). The ICSC project is
intended to provide summaries of essential health and safety information
on what the participating agencies hope will be approximately 2000 chemicals.
The "Descriptive Note" link explains more about the project.
The U.S. National
Version link explains that NIOSH has modified the cards to include
more U.S.-specific information. There you can choose to view or print
the HTML versions of these cards. The HTML cards also link to supplementary
information (e.g., first aid procedures or published medical tests).
There are also links on the introductory page to the cards in Chinese,
Finnish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Russian, Spanish,
and Swahili.
Specific Medical
Tests Published for OSHA Regulated Substances
This database is an adjunct to the International Chemical
Safety Cards listing specific published medical tests when possible
for the chemicals. The three indices list the chemical links that show
HTML tables of editors/authors, the medical tests published in the literature,
and full reference information.
Immediately Dangerous
to Life and Health (IDLH) Information
The link above takes you to an HTML version of the NIOSH
publication "Documentation of Immediately Dangerous To Life and Health
Concentrations." According to NIOSH, "the IDLH values are intended
by NIOSH to be used as respirator selection criteria and are found in
the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards." The link above takes
you to the introductory page, the actual information is found in the
links listed under "Contents" further down the page.
Recommendations for
Chemical Protective Clothing
NIOSH intends the "Recommendations for Chemical
Protective Clothing" as a companion to the NIOSH
Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. NIOSH provides recommendations
for skin protection from toxic, corrosive, frostbite and other potential
hazards. The alphabetical links at the bottom of the page take you to
HTML tables for printing and viewing. The twenty-five tables (no J)
list the chemicals alphabetically with recommendations and each table
includes a list of abbreviations and explanations.
2004 North American Emergency
Response Guidebook (DOT)
The link above takes you to the DOT site advertising
the 2000 Emergency Response Guidebook. The guidebook is intended
as an immediate reference for emergency workers in an incident involving
hazardous materials. On this site you will find directions on obtaining
a paper copy of the guide and Adobe Acrobat Reader® files for viewing
and printing. The full Reader® version of the Guidebook is
1.7 megabytes and 383 pages.
NIOSH Manual of
Analytical Methods (NMAM)
NIOSH defines NMAM as "a collection of methods
for sampling and analysis of contaminants in workplace air, and in the
blood and urine of workers who are occupationally exposed." The
link above takes you to the explanatory page which gives you two options:
Ordering NMAM or viewing and printing the analytical methods using Adobe
Acrobat Reader®. There are also Adobe Acrobat® files of the
chapters and front materials from the NMAM.
