Safety Training for Laboratory Workers

Laboratory workers encounter more hazards and require more specific training than nonlaboratory workers.  ORS offers the following courses to laboratory workers at the University.  Depending on the hazards in your laboratory, you may need one or more of the following safety training courses. 

For more information, please contact the Manager of Research Safety Training.  Before registering or attending any of our courses, please read the Training Policies.

Laboratory Safety Training

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Laboratory Safety and PPE Training

This course applies to employees of laboratory facilities where hazardous chemicals are used or stored.  Personal Protective Equipment and understanding Material Safety Data Sheets. Laboratory-specific training must still be provided.

Biological Safety Training

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Bloodborne Pathogens Training

Occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.  Examples include laboratory workers dealing directly with human pathogens or potentially infectious substances, first aid responders, emergency response team members, or health care workers.

Safe Shipping of Biological Materials

Packaging and shipping biological materials with or without dry ice.

Radiation Safety Training

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Radiological Survey Training for Lab Personnel Performing regular radiological surveys. Each lab must have one person attend this training.

X-Ray Safety Training

Operating x-ray diffraction units and x-ray spectrographic fluorescence equipment.

Irradiator User Training

Operating one of the three University-owned gamma irradiators.

Radioactive Materials Safety Training

Working with radioactive material under a specific license.

Comprehensive Radiation Safety Training

Working with radioactive material under a specific license.

Basic Laser Safety Awareness Training

Using class 3b or 4 laser systems.

DOT/Shipping Training

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Safe Shipping of Biological Materials

Packaging and shipping biological materials with or without dry ice.

EPA and Hazardous Waste-Related Training

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Hazardous Waste Management

Disposal of chemicals, chemical waste, or biological materials generated in your laboratory.

Risk Management Training Courses

Course Name

If your job functions include:

Fire Extinguisher Training

Working in an area where employees may use portable fire extinguishers

Integrated Safety Information System (ISIS)

Course Name

If your job functions include:

ISIS Orientation

Entering safety information into ISIS.  ORS requires all laboratories to use ISIS for safety information.
