Safety Training Policies at ORS

ORS provides safety training courses to help Principal Investigators and supervisors comply with regulatory training requirements.  These courses are a supplement to any laboratory-specific training that is conducted inside the lab or at the workplace.

Registration

Employees must register for courses, before attending, to guarantee space and availability.  Classroom courses close the day before the session is held.  Unregistered employees will be allowed to take the course at the instructor’s discretion.  If registration closes and the course is empty, the instructor may cancel the course.

Online Courses

ORS offers some courses online using Blackboard.  Please complete a registration form and mail it to ORS to request enrollment in the online course.  ORS will contact you when you are registered.

Starting Time

Training courses begin promptly at the time listed on the website.  If an employee is not on time, the course instructor shall determine if he or she may continue with the course.  In general, an hour long course may not be completed if the employee is more than 10 minutes late. 30 minute courses may not be completed if more than 5 minutes late.  The employee must register for another session of the course.

Cancellation of Course

If no employee registers for a course within the course's registration period, or no one registered shows up for the course within 10 minutes from the course start time, the instructor may cancel the course. Typically, the course's registration period ends 24 hours before the course begins.

What You Should Bring

Please bring your valid employee ID and a pen or pencil for completing the certification test.  ORS tracks training using employee IDs and will verify that you are the employee completing the course.  ORS will provide any additional materials required to complete the course.  Additional information and supplemental materials may be accessed on the ORS Training website.

Testing

At the end of each course, a test shall be administered so that employees may demonstrate understanding of the material.  ORS requires a score of 70% correct or greater to successfully complete most courses in order to provide a certificate of completion. Employees who fail the test may take the course at the next available opening.  It is ultimately the instructor’s decision to pass or fail a student.

Evaluating the Course

ORS is interested in providing the best learning experience for our employees.  At each course, employees will have a chance to provide written feedback to help improve the course.  They will be able to do this anonymously.  An employee may provide feedback at any time by complete the ORS Course Development Survey.

Questions

If you have questions or comments, or suggestions for additional courses, please contact the Manager, Research Safety Training.
