Northwestern employs a direct tuition charging mechanism by which graduate student research-assistants (RAs) supported by sponsored projects have the tuition component of their support charged directly to the projects. RAs do not pay taxes on the tuition component of their support.

Academic year 2009-10 tuition charges to sponsored projects that carry the full F&A rate are as follows:
Students whose home department is on the Evanston Campus
Full rate (3-4 units) $2,628 per quarter
Advanced rate (500) $2,628 per quarter
The 2009/2010 RAS scholarship rates are as follows:
Full rate (3-4 units) $10,068 per quarter
Advanced rate (500) $ 546 per quarter
Students whose home department is on the Chicago Campus
Full rate (3-4 units) $2,360 per quarter
Advanced rate (500) $2,360 per quarter
The 2009/2010 RAS scholarship rates are as follows:
Full rate (3-4 units) $10,336 per quarter
Advanced rate (500) $ 814 per quarter
The minimum stipend level to receive an RAS scholarship is $1,763
per month.
Neither the fringe benefit rate nor the F&A rates will be applied to the tuition portion of an RA's support. An RA's compensation and tuition will be charged simultaneously to a project by completing a Research Assistant Scholarship form, available from The Graduate School, and appropriate payroll forms.
