Northwestern requires that all postdoctoral fellows be compensated equitably and in compliance with applicable tax regulations. Postdoctoral fellows (excluding Postdoctoral trainees supported on National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award Training Grants and Fellowships) paid by or through the University have the status of University staff, with the same benefits as research associates (see "Staff Status for Postdoctoral Fellows")
The University requires that requests for extramural funding include a provision for the University's benefit rate on the salaries of postdoctoral fellows. In cases where a funding agency is unwilling or unable to fund the benefit rate fully, it is incumbent upon the investigator or department/center to provide supplemental funds from other sources for support of the postdoctoral fellows' benefits. The anticipated account number(s) on alternate source(s) of support for fringe benefit funding must accompany the application's submission to OSR.
