Mission and Goals

Science in Society is a Northwestern University office dedicated to science outreach and public engagement. We work to bridge the gap between the community and the University by developing and promoting science programming for youth and adult audiences, as well as training researchers to communicate effectively with the public.

Our efforts are focused on the following three goals:

  • Link, amplify and extend science outreach efforts of departments, centers, institutes, Northwestern student groups, and affiliated institutions; share best practices for science outreach including resources and tools for evaluation
  • Train faculty, students, and staff to effectively communicate their research to non-expert audiences
  • Solicit and act on University- and community-based needs for science outreach programs; encourage more Northwestern students, faculty and staff to participate in these programs

Information about the science outreach initiatives already ongoing at Northwestern, both through our office and a wide range of University groups and affiliates, can be found on this site. If you would like to get involved, have an idea for a new initiative, or would simply like more information, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!

SiS is supported by the Feinberg School of Medicine and the Office for Research of Northwestern University, as well as by a gift from the Shaw Family Supporting Organization.
